A third explanation of America’s rather modest performance over the past decade is that the ideal model changes with economic circumstances—and the American model might be only just coming into its prime.<

Undoubtedly, he said, it is good for people to believe in the true religion (the Church of England, of course); but the magistrate, he added, nonetheless “has no commission, no right,” to enforce proper piety. The point he was making is the foundation-stone of toleration in particular and of liberal government in general: that there is a private sphere which governments may not invade, even for the obvious benefit of those affected. A goodly share of today’s anti-smoking rhetoric is crafted to fudge this principle, or to drown it out with indignant noise. < saint> http://www.economist.com/3QJMDbrs/editorial/freeforall/library/politics/index2_xm0001.html “THE right to be left alone.” For many this phrase, made famous by Louis Brandeis, an American Supreme Court justice, captures the essence of a notoriously slippery, but crucial concept. A cache of Callas uncovered
By Richard Dyer, Globe Staff, 10/15/99
For years fans have hunted down missing recordings of live performances by Maria Callas. A few prizes believed to exist have proved elusive, but recently something no one had any reason to believe survived turned up - an excellent tape of a Callas concert from her 1958 American tour. VAI will issue it on CD next month.

BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTS CONSIDERED?
by Karen Antman
Every year doctors in the U.S. tell thousands of patients that a bone marrow transplant, and not conventional therapy, may eradicate their disease. The side effects of such a transplant-which for some cancers is still experimental-can be substantial, even lethal. Nevertheless, a relatively young and otherwise healthy person faced with a deadly disease will often opt for this chance to be cured.

NASA's decision to send astronomer Eugene Shoemaker's ashes to the Moon has ruffled the feathers of the native American Navajo Nation. Shoemaker, who died in a car crash last July, had his ashes launched on the Lunar Prospector probe. But Albert Hale, President of the Navajo Nation, says this is insensitive to his people, for whom the Moon is sacred. Marijuana Special Report: The dope on dealers Even the tiniest traces of cannabis can now be detected A compound will soon be on the trail of dope dealers. A new swab test can reveal if suspects have handled cannabis. It's so sensitive that there are worries that innocent people could be incriminated. The DNA-based test, which will be described fully in a forthcoming edition of the journal Science and Justice, was developed at the forensic science unit at the University of Strathclyde. Researchers identified DNA sequences within the part of the plant cell responsible for photosynthesis--the chloroplast--that are specific to Cannabis sativa, but which are not found in any other species. The main questions would be whether in addition to being compulsory to obtain a card it would be necessary to carry it everywhere or to produce it within a certain number of days if required. The more people who have identity cards, the more likely they are to be used and the benefits seen. Whilst this might deter criminals or illegal immigrants, some people may argue that making a card compulsory is an unwarranted interference by the state. On the other hand, if identity cards proved useful and helpful then law-abiding citizens with nothing to hide may favour such a scheme. http://www.wadham.ox.ac.uk/~rhouston/news/id-gov.html LOVE http://www.dozyrosy.demon.co.uk/Valentine/ The Mallard, this famous steam locomotive was designed for the London & North-Eastern Railway and built at the railway's works in Doncaster.
